We here at Bergsig Game Farm are celebrating Tigwa, our second youngest giraffe cow's FIRST birthday today, the 28th of January 2021. Giraffes give birth while standing, the calf will drop almost 2m to the ground. Giraffes are the tallest land animals, their eyes are located on either side of its head, they have good smelling and hearing senses. A giraffe can close its nostrils in sand storms and against ants and its tongue can get 45cm long. Like Tigwa and the other giraffes on Bergsig, each giraffe has a unique coat pattern. They feed on leaves, fruits and flowers of Acacia trees, their favourite. Tigwa is not with her mother the whole time, as giraffes form creches and trusted individuals will look after the calf while the mother feeds elsewhere. Bergsig Game Farm has a total of 17 giraffes for tourists to come and observe.
